Ford Motor Company has been showing off new technology in Louisville, Kentucky, that allows cars to communicate with each other.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report carried out in the US, the advanced technology would help prevent approximately 80 per cent of all light-vehicle crashes.

At the event, Ford demonstrated its research in the car park of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, home of the Louisville football program. The system monitors a 300metre circle and communicates with other cars using wi-fi and GPS (Global Positioning System), warning drivers of potential accidents and hazards.

Ford took their research to the US Department of Transportation. Mary Wroten, Ford’s accident avoidance expert, said: “With this type of technology you’ll be able to get a type of warning and see things you that you could not traditionally see and sense the vehicle is coming in the opposite direction and tell you to take some type of action and avoid the eminent threat.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation will decide in 2013 whether it wants to adopt the technology in all vehicles. It could be a regulation by 2020, she said.
For the past 10 years, UK highway authorities have been trying to achieve the Government’s 2010 casualty reduction targets. These targets include a 40% reduction in the number of fatal accidents and non-fatal road accidents, compared to the national average for 1994-98.
